Freedom and unity memorial

Berlin

The Freedom and Unity Memorial is being built in the center of Berlin, opposite the west portal of the palace. It will be constructed on the preserved pedestal of the horseman statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I.

After the Wilhelmine national monument remained undamaged during the Second World War, it was demolished by the GDR regime in 1949. The supporting structure and the detailed solutions of the new monument are designed with respect for the heritage-protected structures of the underground chambers and vaults. The movable shell and its accesses are placed on the old base. The shell is constructed using a weight-optimized spatial supporting structure made of steel components, as is familiar from bridge construction. A combined spring and damping system ensures smooth movement at all times. The substructure is formed by a robust pile head slab, the surface of which is adapted to the shape of the shell. All historical chambers are carefully closed with new constructions. The geometry of the construction is determined by both the old building and the shape of the shell. This makes it extremely complicated. Thanks to 3D modeling, it was done flawlessly.
